The best way to learn Korean

Dear Hoonie,

What is the best way of learning Korean language?

Based on the knowledge and insight of me on 2024,

those are my latest answer.

The best way to learn Korean = Comprehensible input

What is a comprehensible input?

Let’s say you went to a Korean grocery shop.

The worker is holding a watermelon and speaking in a loud voice.

“수박 사세요, 수박! 수박! 수박!”

You have never heard of ‘수박’, but you know it means watermelon.

You ‘comprehend’ that input.

So what is the ideal way to learn Korean?

  1. You have a native Korean speaker in your house constantly telling you in the Korean language.
  2. Even though you don’t know what he speaks, you comprehend through the context.
  3. You keep exposing yourself to more and more difficult inputs. Input that you understand 70% is the optimal level.
  4. You slowly start to speak.
  5. You keep learning through the conversation with the native speaker.

But is it ever possible to have a native Korean speaker in your house?

No.

That’s why I developed the Korean Express Beginner.

I’ll tell you more about that later.

But for today, all you need to know is this:

The best way to learn Korean = Comprehensible input

Q) I have listened to lots of Korean speaking through Kdramas. But why am I not fluent yet?

A) If you’re busy reading the subtitles, there’s no room for comprehensible input.

If your Korean level is upper-intermediate and you can understand 70% without subtitles, Kdrama will be the ideal learning method.

If your Korean level is a beginner and you want to use Kdrama as a learning method, you want to watch the same episode over and over again to the point where you know all the meanings without subtitles.

By that time, Kdrama can be a comprehensible input for you.
